6 Days Kilimanjaro Trekking Marangu Route

Itinerary Description by Day
Day 1. Marangu Gate (1750 m) To Mandara Hut (2750 m).
Pickup from your accommodations in Moshi and drive to Marangu gate for registration formalities. Start climbing through the beautiful rainforest giving you a chance to see wildlife including blue monkeys. The trail leads to Mandara hut to arrive in the late afternoon. Dinner and sleep at the camp.
Day 2. Mandara Hut (2750 m) To Horombo Hut (3807 m) .
Climb through the rainforest approaching the moorland zone which displays magnificent views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Have lunch enroute and continue trekking to reach Horombo hut. Dinner and overnight stay at the hut.
Day 3. Horombo Full Board.
Acclimatization day to enable your body getting used to high altitude and lower oxygen levels. Climb steeply up Mawenzi ridge with beautiful scenery of the landscape. Return to the hut in the afternoon in time for lunch. Spend quality time resting and gaining energy for the next day.
Day 4. Horombo Hut (3807 m) To Kibo Hut (4700 m).
Trek through barren volcanic landscape to the lunar desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Arrive at Kibo hut around mid day where you will break for lunch. Get time to rest and take much water in preparation for the summit. It’s recommended to sleep early by 07:00 p.m
Day 5. Ascend To Uhuru Peak (5895m).
Wake up around 23:30 for a hot cup of coffee and putting on trekking gears. By midnight, transfer to the base of the mountain for the final summit attempt. Hike through the volcanic scree to reach Gilman’s point at 5700 m. Rest a while and make the final 1:30 hour round trip to Uhuru peak (Africa’s highest peak). Get time for photographs while feeling accomplished standing at the roof of Africa. After much celebrations and rest, start descending to reach Mandara hut in the evening. Dinner and overnight stay at the camp.
Day 6. Retrace To Marangu Gate.
Have breakfast and go for a short walk to finally reach Marangu gate. Upon arrival, show appreciation to the team by tipping them. Get awarded with certificates whereby golden certificates are given to hikers who reached Uhuru peak and green certificates for Gilman’s point hikers. Drive to Moshi/Arusha for much celebrations or a flight back home.
